Brilliant Curriculum

At the heart of Journey to Brilliance is the Brilliant Curriculum, which supplements the national curriculum to inspire, engage and nurture every aspect of each student. These three core principles underpin the key components of the curriculum that enable students to become confident, competent and responsible learners, who go on to be innovative and resilient citizens.

INSPIRE

Authentic, empathetic, trusting educators lead the way

Educators are the single most important component in education, and can either have a positive or negative impact on their students’ learning and self-esteem.

WHY WE INSPIRE KIDS

Research shows that great teachers inspire their students through strong interpersonal relationships while impersonal, results-oriented teachers tend to turn students off learning. Brilliant educators have four key attributes: a high level of inner strength that allows them to hold their realness and self-authority in the difficult situations they will often find themselves; the ability to genuinely accept, trust and warmly care for every student without judgement; the ability to empathize with each student, to see and respond to their unique situation and current experience; and lastly the ability to facilitate learning rather than dictate learning.

In summary:
• Self-authority and personal realness
• Place high value and trust in students
• Empathetic acceptance of others
• Facilitators of student learning

THE RESULTS

WHEN STUDENTS FEEL VALUED AND FREE OF JUDGEMENT, THEY CAN MOVE BEYOND SAFETY MODE AND OPEN UP TO THE WORLD. THEY BECOME CONFIDENT, WILLING AND OPEN LEARNERS.
Learning is a natural part of life, and is heavily influenced by our relationships, especially our human relationships. Because children are so vulnerable, they need the approval of others to verify their experiences. When children’s experiences (sensations, feelings, independent thoughts, imaginings) are ignored or denied, they learn to ignore or deny them themselves. When their experiences are understood, accepted and supported by adults, children learn to stay open and further develop their innate abilities. This is key to our children growing beyond 10% of their native potential.

In summary, they:
• feel safe to express feelings and experiences
• feel their unique nature is understood and valued
• are supported in their personal learning style
• are free from peer competitiveness

<h3>ENGAGE</h3>

ENGAGE

Ensure experiences are meaningful and reflect real life

School needs to be a place where children are able to engage in activities that are meaningful to their real life situations.

WHY WE ENGAGE KIDS

According to statistics, 62% of NZ students find school boring, wondering why they are required to learn ‘stuff’ that has little or no relevance to their lives. Students live in the real world, with real-life issues and their own set of interests and abilities. The Brilliant Curriculum looks to deeply engage every student in their learning, putting it into meaningful, practical, real-life contexts wherever possible. Core learning such as literacy and numeracy are complemented by a range of optional subjects and personally-chosen projects. Computers enable them to access an unlimited supply of up-to-date information to make learning relevant to their lives.

Key attributes:
• Real-world, experiential learning activities
• Student-initiated projects
• Contemporary information and knowledge used
• Current issues explored and acted on

THE RESULTS

SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS COME FROM DISCOVERING AND DEVELOPING THE THINGS WE ARE NATURALLY GOOD AT RATHER THAN THE THINGS OTHERS WANT US TO BE GOOD AT. STUDENTS BECOME COMPETENT AND RESPONSIBLE.
We all have our own set of interests and abilities. When we force children to learn things they do not see as relevant, we are imposing an external agenda that disengages them from their inner spirit. When students have a say in the choice and method of their learning, they get to explore, experiment and discover what is meaningful and useful for them. They learn that their life is for them to create.

In summary:
• students learn how to learn
• students are guided to set challenging learning goals
• co-operation and collaboration practiced
• students partner in school operation

<h3>NURTURE</h3>

NURTURE

A culture of empowerment

The traditional school environment disempowers our children. Economically-driven agendas develop a fraction of our children’s minds.

WHY WE NURTURE KIDS

Agenda-driven education uses the same obedience-training techniques we use to tame dogs and horses (reward and punishment) to train us to accept a limited, survival-oriented life. The Brilliant Curriculum is designed to develop the whole brain and spirit of every student, via our educators, but also through the educational, social and physical environment. We add three crucial subjects to the traditional state curriculum: the building brilliance self-development program, socio-literacy to develop interpersonal skills, and eco-literacy to strengthen student’s relationship with the planet. Students are encouraged to understand who they are, how to work alongside others to achieve greater results and how our planet works so that their adult life can be a constructive force rather than a destructive force.

Key points of difference are:
• Self-growth, social skills, ecology as core subjects
• High expectations and consistent boundaries
• Small class sizes within a natural environment
• Assessment focuses on personal growth not national norms

THE RESULTS

STUDENTS DEVELOP HIGH LEVELS OF SELF-AUTHORITY AND RESILIENCE TO HELP THEM SURVIVE AND SOLVE SOCIAL AND ECOLOGICAL ISSUES.

Students need and want the freedom to question old practices and to create healthy new ones that will require substantial changes in our society. Resilience is created through the development of a strong inner authority – by exploring and realising who you are at physical, emotional, mental and intuitive levels.

In summary, our curriculum encourages:
• holistic personal awareness and growth
• development of self-authority
• individual thought and expression
• dreams, goals and values

Our advanced curriculum supplements core academic subjects with three modules that focus on developing the students’ awareness of themselves, one another and the world around them.

Academic subjects are taught as and when each child is ready, in a meaningful, personalised and practical way.

The Brilliant Curriculum enables students to reach the level of proficiency they need to succeed in everyday adult life and encourages those who have a passion for these skills to explore and develop them to their highest abilities. To make learning a positive experience, it must be taught as and when each child is ready. To be comfortable, efficient and meaningful, the learning needs to be personalised and reinforced through application in real-life activities and projects.
